Every Hardman piece starts in a forest. The wood species, the soil it grew in, the way the forest is cared for. All of it shapes the piece that you select for your home or project.

That's why we're selective about where our wood comes from. We only use FSC-certified oak, walnut, ash, and iroko, sourced from sustainably managed forests in Europe and North America. FSC certification means the hardwood we use comes from forests where long-term health, biodiversity, and the communities working in them are protected.

These woods are also part of how we think about longevity. Oak, walnut, ash, and iroko are strong, slow-changing hardwoods. They don't warp or shrink the way softer woods do, so the piece you choose will hold up to years of daily use.

All of our hardwood furniture has been crafted by a single production partner, who builds furniture exclusively for us. That means we have close control around how each piece gets made. One result: we use 100% of every tree we work with.

Here’s how we do that:

1. A tree arrives at the workshop. We cut it into rough boards. Offcuts from this early stage are stored and cut into firewood for the local market.
   
   
2. The boards move into a drying chamber to season. This is a slow process; hardwood needs time to release moisture before it's stable enough to build furniture with. The drier the wood, the less it will move or warp once it's part of a finished piece.
   
   
3. The dried boards become furniture. Building each piece involves planing the boards smooth and sanding the surfaces to their final finish. Both steps produce leftover material: planing creates shavings, sanding creates sawdust.
   
   
4. The shavings and sawdust become fuel. We compress them into wood pellets, which power the heating machine that runs the drying chamber. Today's offcuts become tomorrow's drying fuel.

Every Hardman piece is finished by hand with plant-based hardwax oil, a surface treatment made from natural plant oils and waxes. Hardwax oil protects the wood’s surface while letting the grain and tone show through.

Unlike many synthetic topcoats that chip and require a full refinish to correct wear, hardwax oil is designed to be renewed over time. Smaller areas can often be refreshed without refinishing the entire piece, which extends the life of the furniture and reduces the need for replacement.

The natural hardwax oils we use are also low-VOC, contributing to cleaner indoor air. They don't release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that linger long after a finish has been applied. Synthetic finishes often do the opposite, they off-gas slowly for weeks or even months after a piece arrives, which is what causes that distinct "new furniture" smell and what affects the air in the rooms where the furniture lives.

All Hardman furniture is made to order. That means we only build new pieces after you've ordered. The result is less material waste, no stock sitting unsold, and a destination for everything we make: a home, a restaurant, a hotel, a project.

Our mission is to make furniture that earns its place in both form and craftsmanship. That starts with timeless silhouettes and simple curved forms that still feel right decades from now. And it continues in the workshop, where every piece is crafted with its long life already in mind: how it will be used, repaired, and lived with. 

Solid hardwood construction and a renewable finish mean surfaces can be sanded back, finishes can be reapplied in sections, and joinery is built to last. Hardman pieces are designed and crafted to move between homes, cities, and chapters of life rather than being replaced.
