About Hardman

9 questions

Hardman makes refined hardwood furniture for homes and hospitality spaces. Our collection spans dining, living room, bedroom, and outdoor furniture, including dining tables, dining chairs, benches and stools, console and coffee tables, sideboards and storage, desks, armchairs, sofas, and bed frames. Every piece is made to order from solid, FSC-certified oak, walnut, ash, and iroko, with semi-custom and fully custom options available.

Hardman furniture is designed in-house by co-owners Erika and Liam Hardman. They are closely involved from the first sketch through material selection, proportions, details, and final finish.

The collection reflects a hands-on approach to design: clean lines, softly rounded forms, solid wood construction, and details shaped around how each piece will be used.

For semi-custom and fully custom projects, you’ll work with our design team to adapt a piece to your space or develop something new.

Hardman began in Berlin in 2012, where Liam Hardman built every piece by hand. More than a decade later, Hardman is now headquartered in New York City and works with a partner workshop of over 60 master craftspeople.

Yes, every Hardman piece is crafted from solid hardwood, including oak, walnut, ash, or iroko. Solid wood is more durable and longer-lasting than veneered or particleboard furniture, and it can be sanded and refreshed over the years rather than replaced. Our upholstered pieces are built on solid wood frames.

Since 2018, all our pieces have been built by our production partner in Ukraine, who crafts furniture exclusively for Hardman. We formed this partnership to stay close to the craft and maintain consistent standards. In practice, that means any piece you order is built, finished, and reviewed by the same experienced team.

Made to order means your piece is crafted specifically for your space, rather than pulled from stock. Even our standard pieces are made to order, which allows you to choose the size, wood, finish, and fabrics that fit your home or project. This approach also makes it easier to support semi-custom and fully custom requests. For custom pieces, we work with you to confirm all key details before production begins.

Hardman is based in New York City, where founders Erika and Liam Hardman live and work. We design in New York and build each piece through our long-standing partner workshop in Ukraine. We’ll be opening a new showroom in Manhattan in Fall 2026.

You can experience Hardman pieces for yourself at our Manhattan showroom:

Hardman House
525 W 29th St, Floor 2,
New York, NY 10001

Visits are by appointment only starting in September, 2026.

Most Hardman furniture is made to order, so showroom pieces are for viewing rather than purchase, letting you see and feel the materials, finishes, and construction in person. A small selection of items listed online may be in stock and ready to ship; availability is noted on each product page.

Hardman combines solid hardwood construction, made-to-order flexibility, and founder-led design. Every piece is made from solid hardwood, including FSC-certified oak, walnut, ash, and iroko. Our pieces are never made with veneers or MDF.

Each piece is made to order by our partner workshop of 60+ craftspeople and finished by hand with plant-based oils. Standard collection pieces can be tailored by size, wood species, grain character, finish, and fabric, while fully custom projects can start from a new brief, sketch, or idea.

Founders Erika and Liam stay closely involved from design through finishing, so each piece reflects clear proportions, careful details, and a process that is easy to follow from selection to delivery.

Wood, finishes, and materials

10 questions

We work with FSC-certified hardwoods, selected to suit both indoor and outdoor pieces.

For indoor pieces

  • Oak: warm and open-grained
  • Walnut: darker and richer
  • Ash and Smoked Ash: close to oak in structure, but slightly lighter in tone

For outdoor pieces

  • Oak: warm and open-grained
  • Smoked Ash: ash given a darker, smoked tone
  • Iroko: a durable, golden-brown hardwood

No, every Hardman piece is built from solid hardwood throughout, not veneer over MDF or particleboard. Solid wood is more durable, can be sanded and refinished over time rather than replaced, and ages beautifully, which is central to how we make furniture meant to last and move with you between homes.

The single exception is the under construction of our LULU sofa, where we use solid wood plywood with a veneer finish. We chose this material because it is exceptionally strong, dimensionally stable and allows for a much thinner, lighter construction than solid timber.

Yes, all of the hardwoods we use are FSC-certified and come from sustainably managed forests.

FSC stands for the Forest Stewardship Council, an independent organization that certifies wood from responsibly managed forests.

An FSC-certified label means the timber is traced through the supply chain and meets strict environmental and social standards, including protecting biodiversity and the rights of forest workers and communities. All of the hardwoods we use, oak, walnut, ash, and iroko, are FSC-certified and come from sustainably managed forests.

Yes, you can choose the grain character on table tops.

Oak comes in four grades

  • Natural: some knots and active grain
  • Less Knots: calmer, with fewer knots
  • Grade A: premium Grade A oak with minimal knots

Walnut comes in two grades

  • Standard: visible tonal contrast and grain
  • Grade A: more uniform color

For all character options, knots and cracks are filled with dark epoxy to seal the surface and give a smooth, consistent finish.

All indoor pieces are finished with OSMO Polyx Oil, a natural hardwax oil that enhances the grain while protecting against moisture, temperature changes, and everyday stains. It’s also water-resistant and easy to clean. Our standard finish is Matt. For walnut and oak pieces, we also offer a Teak Oil finish, and for oak pieces, a White Oil finish.

All outdoor pieces are treated with Rubio DuroGrit, a plant-based exterior wood finish designed to protect against weathering, UV exposure, and daily outdoor use.

Yes, all indoor and outdoor pieces are finished with plant-based finishes that can be renewed over time. Unlike many synthetic topcoats that can chip or require a full refinish to correct wear, these finishes can be renewed over time, and smaller areas can often be refreshed without redoing the entire piece. You can find full step-by-step refinishing guidance on our Aftercare page.

For our indoor pieces, we work with natural Italian linen and leather as standard, along with a range of additional fabrics. We also accept COM (customer’s own material) on any upholstered Hardman piece.

For outdoor pieces, we work with water-resistant and UV-protected upholstery and also sell outdoor-ready furniture covers.

Yes, we accept customer’s own material on any upholstered piece.

Customization and custom orders

11 questions

Yes, all the pieces in our collection can be customized. We can adjust dimensions, support custom finishes, and help you specify upholstery and fabrics to suit your space or project. For more extensive requests, we can also develop fully bespoke pieces.

Semi-custom means working within an existing design: adjusting dimensions, choosing a different wood species or finish, or specifying fabric for an upholstered piece.

Fully custom means starting from a new brief. This might be a significantly modified version of an existing piece, a new form, or a design that starts from your sketches. We handle both.

Every piece from our standard line can be tailored to fit your home or project. Common adjustments include:

  • dimensions
  • hardwood
  • wood character (more or less visible knots)
  • finish
  • upholstery fabrics

Beyond adjustments to our standard line, we can also take on fully custom work or make significant modifications to pieces in our collection, including:

  • special finishes
  • upholstery details
  • custom fabrics
  • non-standard sizing

We can make custom pieces for homes, outdoor spaces, and contract or hospitality projects. Dining tables are one of our best-known custom categories, but they are only the start. We regularly create custom:

  • Dining tables
  • Dining chairs, benches, and stools
  • Console, coffee, and side tables
  • Sideboards and storage
  • Desks
  • Armchairs and sofas
  • Bed frames
  • Outdoor furniture
  • Contract-grade pieces for hospitality and commercial spaces

If you have something specific in mind, get in touch and we’ll talk it through.

Yes, we can adjust the width and length of any dining table in our collection. Original proportions and joinery are preserved as dimensions change. We can also scale tables for larger residential or hospitality projects.

Yes, if you love a Hardman collection but need a piece that isn’t part of it, we can design one to match. For example, a side table in the LÜNA style, a bench to pair with a dining table, or a console that fits an existing bedroom set. We’ll design your new piece to match seamlessly, with the same proportions, details, and finish.

Yes, you can collaborate with our design team on a one-of-a-kind piece that starts from your own idea, sketch, or brief. We’ll guide you through material choices, finishes, dimensions, and design details, then share sketches and 3D models so you can review the piece before it goes into production.

We guide each custom project step by step, from the first conversation through final delivery.

1. Consultation

Share your ideas with our team in person at our showroom, online, or over the phone.

2. Design

  • We translate your ideas into a design and work with you to select the right materials, including wood species, finish, character, and fabric.
  • For fully custom work, we develop the design from scratch and provide renders and technical drawings for your approval before production begins.

3. Production

Our team of 60+ craftspeople builds each piece by hand at our partner workshop in Ukraine.

4. Delivery

  • White-glove delivery is available across GB.
  • Lead times for custom and semi-custom work depend on the scope of your project and are confirmed during the consultation.

The cost of custom-made furniture depends on the design, materials, and specifications you choose. Every Hardman order includes a complimentary design consultation. If your project requires custom modifications beyond our standard options, a one-time £80 customization fee will apply. This fee covers the additional steps required in the production process. For an exact quote, please get in touch.

Lead times for custom and semi-custom work depend on the scope of the project and are confirmed during the consultation stage.

Standard collection pieces have a lead time of 16 to 26 weeks.

Yes, custom and semi-custom work is a core part of the Hardman Trade Program. Trade partners work with experienced, dedicated team members from initial pricing through production. Finish samples, spec sheets, CAD files, and 3D models are available on request.

Samples, ordering, and cancellations

8 questions

Yes, we offer wood samples so you can see and feel the species, grain, and finish before you order. Samples are double-sided to show both of our standard sheens, Matt and Satin. Samples cover our four FSC-certified hardwoods: oak, walnut, ash, and iroko. You can request them from our Wood Samples page. Trade clients receive complimentary finish samples and swatches.

You can order directly on our website. Visit the relevant product page for the furniture you’re interested in, select the correct specifications and ‘add to cart’. If you'd like adjustments beyond the standard options, or help specifying a piece, get in touch and we'll guide you through it.

All Hardman furniture is made to order, so your piece is crafted specifically for you after your order is placed. We’ll keep you updated as it moves through production.

You will receive all production updates via email through a single point of contact throughout the build. We send updates approximately every three weeks, as well as at key production milestones (early, mid and late production). Once your piece is complete, we’ll send finished photographs for approval before dispatch.

You are also welcome to contact us at any stage by email or phone or schedule a call back if you would like a production update or have any questions.

Some furniture arrives assembled while other pieces arrive flat-packed and need assembly.

Some furniture arrives assembled while other pieces arrive flat-packed and need assembly.

All dining chairs, stools, sofas, and loungers arrive fully assembled. Most other pieces arrive flat-packed for safe transport. All required hardware is included, and assembly instructions are shared digitally.
As many pieces are heavy and arrive in protective solid wood or plywood packaging, we strongly recommend white-glove delivery. It includes delivery to your room of choice, installation, and removal of packaging for a flat rate of £75 for all standard residential orders. Larger trade orders may incur a higher white-glove fee, please get in touch if you have questions.

Yes, standard products may be canceled or returned within 30 days of delivery.

If you cancel before your order ships, we’ll confirm the cancellation and stop delivery. Once an order has left our workshop or has been delivered, a £89 return fee applies.

Please get in touch to cancel or return an order.

Orders for custom pieces can only be canceled if production has not yet begun. Once production has started, custom orders cannot be canceled, because each piece is made individually to your specifications. Returns are also not accepted for custom pieces.

If your custom piece arrives damaged or defective, please contact us within 24 hours of receiving your shipment. Please keep any documents related to the delivery or product, as these may be required to process a claim.

If there is an issue with your custom piece, we will first work to repair or rebuild the product so it meets the agreed specifications. A refund will only be considered if the issue cannot be resolved through repair or replacement.

You can read our full Cancellation of Custom Orders Policy here.

If a custom order is canceled by mutual agreement, a cancellation fee of 10% of the order total applies, and any deposit is non-refundable and applied toward that fee. This covers the design, materials, and labor already committed to your piece.

You can read our full Cancellation of Custom Orders Policy here.

Yes, if you'd like to change a custom order, let us know as early as possible. Depending on what's changed and how far along production is, amendments may add to the cost and extend the lead time.

Delivery

13 questions

Hardman delivers across Great Britain in the UK. We do not deliver to Northern Ireland.

The lead time for our standard collection pieces is 16 to 26 weeks from order to delivery. Lead times for custom and semi-custom pieces depend on the scope of the project and are confirmed during the consultation stage.

In the UK we offer free delivery to GB. We do not deliver to Northern Ireland.

If you prefer that we handle assembly and packaging removal, we offer a White Glove Installation Service for a flat rate of £75. All our pieces are delivered with all necessary hardware included.

Tables and larger pieces are delivered flat-packed to keep them safe in transit, while smaller items may arrive assembled. Dining chairs ship fully assembled, with no assembly required.

Each piece ships in a solid wooden crate made to protect furniture and fragile items in transit. We recommend keeping the packaging, since it is ideal for protecting the piece if you ever need to move or store it.

For tables, you can estimate the packaged size by adding about 10 cm to each dimension of the tabletop.

Yes, if you'd prefer that we handle packaging removal, assembly, and placement in your room of choice, we offer a White Glove Installation Service for a flat rate of £75 for all standard residential orders. Larger trade orders may incur a higher white-glove fee, please get in touch if you have questions.

When your order is ready to ship, we’ll contact you directly to arrange a delivery date and time and share your tracking code. Once production is complete, delivery within GB typically takes 1 week.

If you'd like to change your delivery address, get in touch and we'll update it on your order. You can also reach us at hello@hardmandesigns.com.

You can share detailed delivery instructions when we arrange the courier and delivery with you. You can also share delivery instructions via email at hello@hardmandesigns.com. Please always include your order number in any email correspondence.

In most cases, your items will arrive together. Occasionally they may be delivered separately, though that's not the norm. We try to keep deliveries to a minimum, both for your convenience and to reduce our carbon footprint.

If you choose delivery with installation, please make sure your piece can reach its intended room. Measure any doorways, hallways, staircases, and tight corners in advance so our two-person team can carry it into place. If a piece can't be delivered to the room of choice, additional costs may apply.

Yes, once your order is completed and securely packed, your delivery is insured until it reaches your property.

Liability transfers to you once the order has been safely delivered to your property.

If your piece arrives damaged, please note the damage on the Proof of Delivery document before signing. This is required for any insurance claim.

Please also contact us within 24 hours of delivery at hello@hardmandesigns.com and include photos of the damage, packaging, and product. Keep all original packaging and delivery documents until the issue is resolved.

Warranty, care, and returns

4 questions

All of our indoor products come with our own 5-year guarantee. It covers the structural integrity of your furniture and all of its components, as well as faults or defects from manufacturing.

For outdoor pieces, a 1-year guarantee applies, given their exposure to weather and natural wear. Depending on the nature of the claim, we'll provide a replacement part, a partial refund, or a complete new unit.

Your Hardman furniture is built from solid wood and finished by hand, so a little routine care keeps it looking its best. Care depends on whether a piece is for indoors or outdoors.

Indoor pieces (finished with Osmo Polyx-Oil)

  • Use coasters and placemats to prevent water rings and heat marks.
  • Avoid dragging dishes, glasses, or sharp objects across the surface.
  • Wipe up spills promptly to prevent moisture absorption.
  • Refresh the surface about twice a year to maintain protection.

Outdoor pieces (treated with Rubio DuroGrit)

  • For uncovered areas we suggest using waterproof furniture covers.
  • Clean periodically with mild soap and water.
  • Reapply the exterior finish as needed to maintain weather protection.

You can find full step-by-step guidance on cleaning, refinishing, scratch repair, upholstery, and outdoor care on our Aftercare page.

If you're not satisfied with a standard piece, you can return it within 30 days of delivery. A collection fee of £89 applies for returns within the UK.
Please note that custom-made pieces can't be returned.

Because wood is a natural material, tone can vary slightly from piece to piece. We always recommend ordering samples before you buy, so you can see the species, grain, and finish in person and feel confident in your choice.

If you're still unhappy with the color when your piece arrives, contact us right away. We’ll review the issue with you and talk through the best next step.

If you receive the incorrect product or part of your order is missing, contact us within 24 hours of delivery. We’ll review the issue and work with you to make sure you receive the correct, complete order.

Yes. We regularly support larger-volume projects, such as restaurants, cafés, and hotels that need dozens of matching tables, chairs, and other pieces. Get in touch with the details of your project and we’ll talk through quantities, timelines, and options.

Hardman furniture is available in FSC-certified oak, walnut, ash, and iroko.

All indoor pieces are finished with OSMO Polyx Oil, a natural hardwax oil that enhances the natural grain while also being water-resistant, easy to clean, and helps protect against moisture, temperature changes, and everyday stains.

All outdoor pieces are treated with Rubio DuroGrit, a plant-based exterior wood finish designed to protect against weathering, UV exposure, and daily outdoor use.

Our standard finish is Matt. For walnut pieces, we also offer a Teak Oil finish, which makes the natural wood tones warmer and more pronounced. For oak pieces, we offer a White Oil finish, which softens oak’s natural yellow tone.

All wood samples are double-sided to show both sheen options.

Every piece from our standard line can be tailored to fit your project. Common adjustments include:

Beyond adjustments to our standard line, we can also take on fully custom work or make significant modifications to pieces in our collection, including:

  • special finishes
  • upholstery details
  • custom fabrics
  • non-standard sizing
